Lets say Shapiro only wants to guarantee 5 million with 2 million in innings pitched incentives. Lets Say Boras wants 7 million solid, no ifs and or buts...

It seems that a two deal could be the way to compromise.

How about a 2 million dollar buyout or no buyout and a second year at 9 million?

Year number one would be 5 million guaranteed, 2 million in incentives (related to innings pitched), and a 2 million buyout, (provided Millwood passes a physical a year from now).

If we don't buy out the contract after one year (and save the two million from the first year) it means Millwood had a solid first year and with another successful physical would be worth having back at 9 million, the net result is a two year deal at 16 million OR a one year deal at either 5,7, or 9 million.

That pretty much covers all the bases doesn't it?

I have to laugh at these so called "experts" dissing Shapiro for overpaying for Millwood. They claime the price has been established by the RSox signing of Miller. Uh, no morons, the price has been established by the Reds for Milton, the Mets for Benson, the Yankees for Pavano and the beat goes on.

I'm guessing they haven't had their lawyers go over Millwood's contract yet. I'm going to take a wild stab at saying that they (the sports analysts) haven't had their company's medical experts check out Millwood's physical exam tests so they don't have a clue what his status is. Yet they're going to go off on Shapiro saying that he's overpayed (even though they don't know everything about the deal) Millwood because of his injuries (even though they probably haven't seen the results of his tests). :rolleyes

Sorry, but I'm not going to let them or anybody else stand in the way of my euphoria. :banana

As to Millwood money, let us assume it is $7 million. Atlanta offered him $4 million. Let us assume that is an overpayment of $3 million as he goes 9-13 and really ***** in September

Matt is pulling down $25 1/2 Million over the next 3, an overpayment of at least $12 million


I mean even in a bad year, Millwood topped Clement last year

Clearly Dolan and Shapiro badly wanted to shore up the rotation this year. Maybe now the "Dolan is cheap" contingent will have the common sense and decency to shut up for a while. On second thought, I doubt it.

I agree Tito! In life and baseball, you just have to enjoy the ride. You take the good and the bad. The Yin-Yang. Will the Millwood signing ensure a World Series Championship? Who knows? Who should care? All that matters is that it is a good signing, and should improve the team.

Now let's get some tickets and go see them play and cheer our hearts out for them!

Even complete and total ignorant @#%$ morons like Dennis have to admit Shaprio once again made a tremendous move. Oh, and how does it feel to hear everyone in the media absolutely GLOW about Shapiro's negotiation tactics. The guy flat-out does NOT get bullied around like about 26 or 27 other GM in baseball. He says what he feels a player is worth and works with that instead of going with the "everything it takes to get a deal done" approach which almost always goes bad.


Shapiro knows how to spend money incredibly wisely. $3 million guaranteed to Millwood, $350,000 to Betancourt, $350,000 to Matt Miller, <$1 million to Howry, $2.5 million or so to Belliard, <$3.5 million for Blake. The guy spends money wisely. Yes, Dolan does not allow him to spend a great deal. But we are EASILY the best low-payroll team. Our payroll is hovering around $46 million and we are very much in the hunt for the division and have the potential right now to win 88-93 games this year if Millwood remains healthy.

Notice that was the only that mentioned a second year option for Millwood!

As this year progresses, if Millwood holds it together, we will hear A LOT of complaining from the fans about there not being a second year option on Milwood.

The ONLY person who questioned why there was no second year option for the Indians when Millwood originally signed was me.

The first people who accuse others of rampant negativity and bad behavior are many times the ones usually guilty of such behavior, but they get the "jump" on the nicer people, sad really.
This is a pattern I have noticed on internet forums in general.

Was I really being negative for simply seeing beyond this year when it came to Millwoods contract?

I don't think I was.

I'd seriously consider waiving any decentive clauses put into Millwood's contractif Millwood were to just barely miss the amount of innings he needs to pitch for this season, if it helps us re-sign Millwood for next season.
